Chiropractic: Building a Better World Today, and Tomorrow

Many chiropractors are advocating for the regular spinal check-ups of babies to determine if they have vertebral subluxations. These subluxations can occur at birth or as a result of the birthing process itself. Recent studies have shown that a significant number of newborns have spinal nerve involvement that could potentially endanger their health and, in severe cases, their lives.
Abraham Towbin, a pathologist from Harvard University, discovered evidence of spinal injuries caused by excessive intervention during childbirth, which he referred to as "precipitous delivery techniques." The emphasis on fast delivery in modern obstetrics seems to contribute to these injuries. Dr. Towbin also found evidence of spinal injury in cases of unexplained crib deaths and respiratory conditions. He cites a study by Mathew Duncan, who found that it takes an alarming amount of pressure, ranging from 90 to 140 pounds, to cause spinal damage in infants.
According to Dr. Towbin's research, this level of pressure is not uncommon during the normal delivery process. Even under the best-controlled conditions, the birth process can be a traumatic event for newborns.
Robert Mendelsohn, a medical doctor, asserts that obstetricians are trained to intervene during childbirth, and unfortunately, this interference negatively impacts the physical and intellectual capabilities of a significant percentage of children for the rest of their lives.
Can Chiropractic Care Benefit Children?
Chiropractic care for children has long been supported by clinical evidence. Lorraine Golden, D.C., made significant strides with the Kentuckiana Children’s Center in Louisville, Kentucky, where she successfully treated complex cases like intellectual disabilities and cerebral palsy, despite criticism from both the medical and chiropractic fields.
Recent research continues to back chiropractic care for children. In 1987, German M.D. G. Gutmann published findings in Manuelle Medizin, showing that blocked nerve impulses at the atlas could cause various issues, including motor impairments and increased infection risks. He reported success with chiropractic adjustments, noting improvements even from light adjustments.
Gutmann examined over 1,000 infants with atlas subluxations, including cases where an 18-month-old boy with multiple health issues saw dramatic improvement after just one adjustment. He found that about 80 percent of children are not in autonomic balance and may benefit from chiropractic care.
Viola Frymann, a colleague of Gutmann, also found that a significant number of newborns experienced issues like vomiting and hyperactivity, which were often alleviated through specific cervical adjustments.
Gutmann’s key conclusions include:
1. Post-Birth Examination: Observing motor development and manually checking the occipito-atlanto-axial joint complex should be routine after difficult births.
2. Adjustment for Developmental Impairments: Examining and adjusting this joint complex for any developmental impairments often proves more successful than other treatments.
Dr. Towbin noted that forceful delivery techniques can cause spinal injuries in newborns, which are often undiagnosed but can impact the child’s biomechanics.
When All Else Fails …
Chiropractic care has proven successful in numerous cases where other treatments failed. Here are a few examples:
A 7-year-old boy, initially expected to develop only to the mental age of 3, started a normal school curriculum after six months of chiropractic care.
A 6-year-old girl with an IQ of 40 saw her score rise to 80 after just two months of chiropractic treatment, as verified by an independent testing agency.
A 4-year-old boy with Down syndrome, who could not walk, dress himself, or speak, began talking after two months of chiropractic care, dressing himself after four months, and said his first words (requesting food) after six months.
Chiropractors worldwide are achieving remarkable results with similar cases. The phrase “you haven’t tried everything until you’ve tried chiropractic” rings true. Chiropractic care has undeniably changed many lives and offers hope to children and their families who have exhausted other options.
